Post the freedom of physically strenuous jobs due to the industrial revolution, slavery has taken its form in the shape of mental torture through meaningless work: middle management of stuff and staff who do not need supervision, box tickers, cold callers, maintenance on the same problems every day, being a Donald Trump etc., you get my point. These are the kind of jobs we don't need a brain for, in fact these are the exact kind of jobs that kill our brains in the first place. Yet many are satisfied to spend a third of their day doing work with no meaning as long as the greens fill their pockets. Not to mention that they are absolutely ready to challenge any change or innovation such as AI which would pose a threat to their jobs, not knowing that this would lead to their retraining which would allow them to enroll in jobs with a purpose. There was a time when we could see the result of our sweat and blood, which was the original definition of work, or labor. But now the notion holds that if you find meaning in your work, the odds are that you will be paid very less for the knowledge that you gain through your profession.
But let's state the inevitable, bullshit jobs are not here to stay as long as humans continue to tweak their machines. In the event that the androids, with the history of all human experiences recreated in their 0s and 1s, there lies a future where we wake up to a very intelligent world, a world where we are passionately challenging ourselves to original problems every day, remarkably distinguishing ourselves in the work we do, a world where our thoughts are confined not to earth but the universes that we are yet to even see.
Having smart androids as sidekicks will only enhance our capabilities to conquer the unconquerable. Have you noticed the names we give to the AIs at the present, we have IBM's Watson, which won the TV game show "Jeopardy!" in the 2000s, and not IBM Sherlock, because for as long as we create them, we continue to stay in the lead.Although they may have won in games requiring speed and analytical prowess, their lack of common sense will continue to define their existence through our guidance. Then again, we strive to simplify and narrow down the complexity of our stupid human thoughts and actions to teach the AI to act a little like ourselves.
With the increasing applications of machine learning, we have come to a point where we select a statistical method and "trust" that the machine efficiently generalizes the scenario. There was a time where we questioned the transparency in a decision-making process due to the lack of information, but at the moment, we are stuck to follow our instincts on the models that perform well to undertake our decisions due to the overwhelming amount of data involved.
Not to mention that our computers are getting faster, which enables the machines to learn in complex levels which has dramatically improved the success rates of the tasks.
Many, including the greatest minds of our times such as Elon Musk and Bill Gates, has the fear that artificially intelligent machines would supersede human potential to control them. Yet I am somehow convinced that humans are smart enough to find a way around it, like they did in terminator salvation. The best analogy would be on how humans learned to harness fire, which continues to take lives and injure people when it goes out of control and when mistakes are made. Designing safety systems has reduced these risks to a great extent and I believe that government policies and corporate giants would establish middle grounds to safely harness AI.
In fact, I do believe that AI will make excellent facilitators for us to expand our potential, physically and mentally. Consider having an AI robot which trains you in boxing, which analyses your moves and exhausts all possible combinations with you during training, enabling you to be a well-learned fighter. I wonder how the future of stock markets would be like, with AIs having a say in financial standings. Healthcare is going for a revolution with faster response rates and low errors in diagnosis leading to quicker healing and lower medical costs.Talk about the people who spend countless years in the ocean, when we can use unmanned ships for patrol and data collection. Think of the many people who have been wrongly sentenced to prison and how criminal justice and law enforcement can be uniformly implemented.
I was lucky to be interviewed as a data scientist (which I did not get) for a company which analyses on the education system, especially in developing countries, which may be a century behind its industries in terms of the techniques taught and skills earned. Education was meant to make workforce employable, but it has backfired, making them more unemployable in terms of their skills and finances. People end up taking jobs that are much lower than their qualifications and accept the situation, seeking comfort in many others who are on the same boat or who are drowning in the ocean of unemployment. AI could help us predict our jobs before we even enroll in a program, thus securing our careers.
Despite the broad applications of AI, it boils down to the agencies and their fundings to bring out a resourceful effect on the inefficiencies. We hope that the government takes up meaningful decisions to aide in the development of an amazing planet. Pfft yea right! Who am I kidding? Some idiots are still arguing about climate change and we expect something to happen about this. Well, good luck to us, Hoomans.
